On 14 March a collision occurred between the tugboat Westport and the containership A. Idefix in the Callao Sea in Peru, resulting in the sinking of the tugboat and six crew injured.
The incident took place at 8:30 AM local time when the tugboat struck the containership, causing a hole in the Westport’s hull. This resulted in the vessel listing to its starboard side before it sank stern-first into the water shortly after.
Six crew members were injured in the incident and the cause of the collision remains unclear and is under investigation.

The tugboat collision was reported to the Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) Callao, which dispatched a Zodiac boat for the rescue of the injured crew members. In addition, the Civil Defence and Disaster Risk Management teams from the Municipality of Callao quickly responded to the accident.
The injured individuals were transported to a nearby hospital. Moreover, to address potential pollution concerns containment barriers were set up after the tugboat sank completely.
Fog in the area at the time is suspected to be a possible factor contributing to the collision. Investigations have been launched, with the National Police and the Navy working together.
