The health and well-being of seafarers have never been more critical to the sustainability and efficiency of the global maritime industry. In an exclusive interview during Nor-Shipping 2025, held from June 2–6 in Oslo, Natalya Butakova, Chief Executive Officer of AP Companies, shared her vision for improving both the physical and mental health of those working at sea.
AP Companies, a global leader in medical health assistance, has been supporting crew members for over 20 years. “Maritime has always been one of our leading areas of expertise,” Butakova emphasized. “We assist seafarers from the very start—pre-employment and re-employment medical examinations—to emergency support during voyages, and even follow-up treatment when they return home.”
For Butakova, the company’s mission is clear: to continuously enhance access to medical care for seafarers at every stage of their journey, ensuring the experience is as seamless, effective, and supportive as possible.
Mental health progress, physical health still lagging
When asked about the current state of seafarer health, Butakova pointed to two critical areas; mental and physical well-being. “Mental health has finally been recognized as a major need for seafarers, especially considering the isolation from families and normal social environments,” she explained.
Improvements in onboard connectivity have allowed crew members to maintain stronger ties with loved ones, mitigating feelings of loneliness. Additionally, shipowners have introduced various mental health support tools, including mobile apps, that provide resources and assistance during voyages.
However, the industry still faces significant challenges regarding physical health. “Obesity remains a major concern, fueled by poor-quality food, disrupted sleep routines, and limited opportunities for physical exercise on board,” Butakova warned. With many seafarers working long hours due to crew shortages, health and wellness often fall by the wayside.
Creating a culture of health on board
For Butakova, fostering a healthier maritime workforce requires a joint effort from shipowners, industry stakeholders, and the seafarers themselves. She advocates for practical measures such as:
- Introducing healthier diets on board
- Allocating even small spaces for physical exercise
- Ensuring adequate rest and sleep
- Providing access to mental health resources, including teleconsultations
“Physical health cannot be overlooked,” she stressed.
A healthier onboard environment will lead to healthier, happier ships—and fewer accidents at sea.
Butakova also highlighted the industry’s ongoing challenge of a global shortage of qualified seafarers. “We must prioritize health, not only to safeguard lives but to attract and retain talent across the maritime sector.”

Marking the Day of the Seafarer on June 25, Butakova shared a powerful message for the industry:
“To stakeholders, I urge you to place the health and well-being of seafarers at the top of your agenda. A healthy workforce benefits the entire maritime industry.
To our seafarers, I encourage you to take small but meaningful steps—improving sleep, diet, and daily habits can change your personal well-being and lead to greater career success and happiness.
