Two men are facing charges over a deadly maritime collision that occurred near Pedra Branca on July 19, 2024, involving two vessels: the Singapore-registered Hafnia Nile and the Ceres I, registered in the Democratic Republic of São Tomé and Príncipe.
On July 19, 2024, a collision occurred between two tankers, Hafnia Nile and Ceres I, about 55km northeast of Pedra Branca. The impact caused both vessels to catch fire, prompting an emergency response that led to the rescue of 36 crew members from the burning ships.
Tragically, a crew member on the Ceres I, died in the incident, and another man, sustained serious injuries.
The accused are an Indian national and a Sri Lankan. Both were crew members aboard the Hafnia Nile at the time. They are charged under the Merchant Shipping Act for allegedly failing to properly carry out their duties, leading to serious damage to both vessels.
The cases against the two accused were mentioned in court on July 2.
