SAFETY4SEA announced the winners of the 2020 SMART4SEA Awards at a prestigious awards ceremony which successfully concluded on January the 28th at Yacht Club of Greece in Athens, the evening ahead of the 2020 SMART4SEA Forum. SMART4SEA Awards are held annually within the scope of awarding industry’s outstanding practices for E-Navigation, Connectivity, Energy Efficiency, Cyber Security, Training, Technology, Personality and Leadership.
The winners of the 2020 SMART4SEA Awards are:
MarineFields Holding Ltd received the received the 2020 SMART4SEA e-Navigation Award, sponsored by Latsco Marine Management Inc., for its data sharing platform Perseus, which enables industry stakeholders to share time stamps and common situational awareness among each other associated to port call operations. It aims at providing capabilities for sharing time stamps, in the standardized format S-211. Other short-listed nominees for this category were: Furuno, Massterly, One Sea and Total Marine Solutions.
MarineFields Holding Ltd, established in February 2017 as an impartial company allowing everyone to connect, provides an impartial and interoperable data sharing platform called Perseus. Namely, Perseus allows a port to connect with upstream and downstream ports; individual ships or shipping companies or other actors within or outside the port. This data sharing platform, which can be used by the existing infrastructure, establishes an ‘Internet of Maritime (IoM)’ by allowing inter-operability between the different involved systems
OTESAT – MARITEL received the the 2020 SMART4SEA Connectivity Award, sponsored by Orpheus Marine Transport Corp, for its ‘s@tGate’ networking tool built for satellite bandwidth management and data transmission optimization in the complex marine IP environment. s@tGate works at the background of any satellite link, allowing integration of further services and applications. Other short-listed nominees for this category were: Airbus, Marlink, MPA Singapore and the Port MiFi project.
s@tGate, developed by OTESAT – MARITEL, is a state-of-the-art networking tool for satellite bandwidth management and data transmission optimization, permitting advanced firewall and network interfaces for both the vessel LAN and the shore WAN at any time- at the IT administrator’s will. s@tGate optimizes vessel’s overall satellite connectivity throughput by balancing the on-board running apps load through exploitation of all active satellite gateways and further unlocks the true potential of broadband connectivity means.
LAROS received the 2020 SMART4SEA Energy Efficiency Award, sponsored by ClassNK, for offering an innovative system that enables remote monitoring and analysis of vessels operational parameters. The LAROS system is a versatile tool that provides diagnosis, prognosis, and early warning by collecting and transmitting data to the operations’ center in real time. Other short-listed nominees for this category were: ABS, Bureau Veritas, Kongsberg Digital & Fujitsu and METIS.
LAROS by Prisma Electronics, is a comprehensive Wireless Remote Monitoring & Performance Analysis system. Namely, LAROS enhanced analytics allow complete vessel situational awareness and profound analysis of all critical ship’s operations in real time. The system can be connected to any point of interest regardless vessels’ age, size or type. LAROS core technology covers all future regulations concerning SOx, NOx and many other particles that will be needed to be monitored and properly reported.
Wärtsilä received the 2020 SMART4SEA Cyber Security Award, sponsored by ABS, for actions to promote cyber security awareness as a founding member of the Operational Technology Cyber Security Alliance (OTCSA), which aims to bridge dangerous gaps in security for operational technology and industrial control systems. Other short-listed nominees for this category were: BIMCO, ClassNK, IACS and the Port of Amsterdam.
As a founding member of the Operational Technology Cyber Security Alliance (OTCSA), which aims to bridge dangerous gaps in security for critical and operational technology (OT) infrastructure, Wärtsilä provides cyber services to assist operators in mitigating identified risks, further promoting cyber security awareness. Wärtsilä has also opened the first International Maritime Cyber Centre of Excellence (IMCCE) in the world, located in Singapore
DNVGL received the 2020 SMART4SEA Training Award, sponsored by Macgregor, for its Maritime Academy which provides one of the broadest portfolios of training courses for the maritime industry. Operating in more than 100 countries, DNV GL course portfolio is based around three core themes: Developing People, Operating Ships and Building Ships. Other short-listed nominees for this category were: the US Navy, Videotel and VSTEP.
DNVGL’s Maritime Academy provides one of the broadest portfolios of training courses for the maritime industry, offering comprehensive training programs on safety, security, ship technology and many other industry topics. With the aim to address cyber security vulnerability, DNV GL’s Maritime Academy also offers a Maritime Cyber Security Awareness E-learning; the course explains in simple steps how and where cyber-attacks may target IT infrastructure and OT systems on board.
METIS Cyberspace Technology SA. received the 2020 SMART4SEA Technology Award, sponsored by Capital Ship Management Corp, for specializing in the development of innovative solutions based on Artificial Intelligence that empower shipping companies towards digital transformation. One of the most prominent examples is the optimization of Hull & Propeller performance through the application of AI and Machine Learning models. Other short-listed nominees for this category were: ABS, C Teleport and Kongsberg.
In less than 4 years since its establishment, METIS Cyberspace Technology SA has managed to make a significant impact on the Global Maritime Industry, specializing in the development of innovative solutions based on Artificial Intelligence and further empowering shipping companies on their journey towards digital transformation. METIS monitors in real time a wide range of vessel parameters and records thousands of signals through its marine-specific, data acquisition equipment which is type approved by Lloyd’s Register.
Mr. Dimitris Theodossiou, Managing Director, DANAOS Management Consultants S.A, received the 2020 SMART4SEA Personality Award, sponsored by SQEMARINE, for his valuable contribution to the industry, introducing the IT Management Systems and integrating technology into a more structured approach to decision making as the Managing Director of Danaos Management Consultants which is a worldwide leader in maritime software solutions.
As a Co- Founder and Managing Director of DANAOS MANAGEMENT CONSULTANTS S.A.- a worldwide leader in maritime software solutions since 1986, Mr. Theodossiou has architected and developed several maritime software solutions in Financial/Ship Management and Commercial domains. Mr. Theodossiou has managed a plethora of maritime composite systems and has leaded scientific teams for several European Research programs.
Mr. Tor A. Svanes, Managing Director, NAVTOR AS, received the 2020 SMART4SEA Leadership Award, sponsored by SQEMARINE, for his valuable contribution to the industry, acting as a leader in the e-navigation field as the Managing Director of NAVTOR which drives shipping towards a digital and smarter future. His unique leadership skillset has attracted respect within the maritime industry, inspiring all stakeholders in their shift from a traditional model in navigation to a more digitalized approach.
In the late 1980s, Mr. Tor Svanes participated in projects who largely defined the development of the ECDIS industry and the international standardization. He also participated in projects that led to the adoption by IMO of the Performance Standard (PS) for ECDIS in 1995. What is more, NAVTOR is a leading force in the provision of innovative e-Navigation solutions, and a total supplier of navigational products and services for the maritime sector.
