Mr. Tor A. Svanes, Managing Director, NAVTOR AS, received the award for his valuable contribution to the industry, acting as a leader in the e-navigation field as the Managing Director of NAVTOR which drives shipping towards a digital and smarter future. His unique leadership skillset has attracted respect within the maritime industry, inspiring all stakeholders in their shift from a traditional model in navigation to a more digitalized approach.
Presenting the award Mrs. Aggeliki Theodosiou, Client Service Manager, SQEMARINE said “Mr. Tor A. Svanes, Managing Director at NAVTOR AS, is a leading figure whose name goes in hand with the concept of ‘e-navigation’. In fact, Mr. Svanes has generated a unique business model that has enabled the industry to embrace the shift towards a more digitalized approach. His dedication to the ECDIS and the electronic chart development, has contributed greatly to building the required trust between the international hydrographic community and the maritime industry as a whole.”
Accepting the award, Mr. Svanes stated “I am so lucky to work in a field that I care so deeply about; something I devoted the last 35 years to and with technologies and services that I believe have had and will have a truly transformational, in our maritime industry. I’ve said it before and I say it now; E-Navigation is the key to unlocking the full potential of smart shipping; a true enabler for greater efficiency; enhanced safety; reduced costs; diminished environmental impact and more sustainable shipping; all benefits we need for maritime to not just survive, but to prosper; evolve and maintain its position in the center of our global society and economy.”
Few people have been as instrumental in the paradigm shift that has taken place in the nautical chart industry as Mr. Tor Andreas Svanes. Notably, in the late 1980s, Mr. Tor Svanes participated in projects who largely defined the development of the ECDIS industry and the international standardization. He also participated in projects that led to the adoption by IMO of the Performance Standard (PS) for ECDIS in 1995. What is more, NAVTOR is a leading force in the provision of innovative e-Navigation solutions, and a total supplier of navigational products and services for the maritime sector. Namely, the company has subsidiaries and distributors across the globe with Egersund, Norway being the headquarters. Mr. Tor Svanes has said that “Automation is increasing, and autonomous vessels are approaching, at least for some segments, but there’s still a way to go.’’
This is a special category award for any individual person that provided industry leadership and contributed towards smarter shipping throughout his/her career, after consideration and review of a list of “Editor’s Pick” nominees by the SAFETY4SEA Team. SMART4SEA Awards are held annually within the scope of awarding industry’s outstanding practices for e-navigation, connectivity, energy efficiency, cyber security, training and smart shipping technology.
