According to a recent statement, US Coast Guard responders are working to remove potential pollutants from the 63-foot fishing vessel Midway Island, which ran aground off Hilo. In fact, the USCG is working with the Department of Land and Natural Resources and contractor personnel to mitigate the potential pollution threat from the vessel. Reportedly, a maximum potential of 1,800 gallons of diesel and two marine batteries are aboard.

A Ukrainian vessel ran aground on the river Danube, on January 28, due to low water levels. As a result, shipping traffic in the river in northern Bulgaria was blocked. As of now it is not cleat when the Danube would be reopened to shipping.

Fire broke out on the wreck of the ro-ro Golden Ray in St. Simons Sound on January 19. When the fire started contractors were contacting welding operations inside the ship. Luckily, the fire was contained within the hull and was quickly put out by the contractor's fireboat.
