Crews on Monday, January 6 2020, placed the 150-ton section of the capsized vessel M/V Golden Ray inside Reef SFC approximately 20 miles east-southeast of St. Simons Island.
Specifically, after the vessel grounding, the stern tube, propeller and rudder were removed and have been deposited at an artificial reef, approximately 20 miles east-southeast of St. Simons Island, Georgia. The components join a collection of M-60 battle tanks, rubble, reef balls and military landing craft at Georgia’s Reef SFC location.
Moreover, according to Georgia DNR Coastal Resources Division all materials taken from the vessel were fully inspected for cleanliness prior to being placed on the water bottom. The rudder was placed flat on its side and the propeller was deployed upright resting on its drive shaft at a maximum height of 30 feet above the seafloor. These pieces of the Golden Ray join M-60 battle tanks, rubble, reef balls and military landing crafts at Reef SFC.
Overall, the vessel capsized on September 8, with 24 rescued crewmembers.
