Kristian Hammer, Product Manager for AFI and Senior Consultant at DNV, has shared the latest data from DNV’s Alternative Fuels Insight (AFI) platform, which reveals the latest trends in alternative-fuelled vessel orders for March 2025.

A total of 25 new orders were placed for vessels powered by alternative fuels, with methanol leading the charge, accounting for 12 of these orders. The methanol-powered vessels include a diverse spread across different segments: 4 tankers, 3 car carriers, 3 cruise vessels, 1 bulk carrier, and 1 offshore vessel. This marks a strong rebound for methanol following a quiet winter period.

Additionally, the container segment saw seven new orders placed for LNG-fuelled vessels, continuing trends in this segment but showing a slowdown compared to recent months. The remaining two orders were for ammonia-fuelled vessels, both in the tanker segment.

While ammonia is still in the early stages as a maritime fuel, these orders underscore its growing viability and help build momentum for its adoption.
