Divers managed to retrieve the black box from X-Press Pearl, on June 6, that has sank of Sri Lanka.
Namely, the Voyage Data Recorder was intact, and could help investigators review procedures and instructions that took place in the accident.
More specifically, divers were deployed to examine the fuel tanks of MV X-Press Pearl, but could not continue their mission because of poor visibility.
The divers have not noticed any oil slick in the area, but another dive will be attempted when the weather has improved.
Sri Lanka now hopes that the black box will provide details of the ship’s communications with the harbour in the capital Colombo, where it would dock.
The ship, carrying 25 tonnes of nitric acid and a huge amount of plastic raw materials, was heading to Colombo from Gujarat, India, when it sank.
Sri Lankan officials informed that an acid leak may have caused the blaze, with the country having launched a criminal investigation.
Finally, Sri Lankan environmentalists sued the government and the ship’s operators for allegedly failing to prevent the “worst marine disaster” in the country’s history.
