The Finnish Coast Guard deployed one of its patrol vessels and a tugboat to assist an oil tanker that experienced engine failure in the Gulf of Finland, aiming to prevent environmental damage.
The Finnish coast guard in a statement said that on 30 December it deployed a tug for assistance to the 183-metre M/T Jazz oil tanker that had been drifting south of Finland’s Hanko Peninsula before anchoring in the area.
The tanker reportedly was on its way to the Russian port of Primorsk and did not carry an oil cargo at the time.
The coast guard stated that the incident was not thought to be connected to the recent damage to undersea power and telecom cables in the area, and that seabed infrastructure was not in danger when the ship anchored.
