Information on vessel tracking initiatives
AMSA was pleased to welcome Dii Thomas from the National Maritime Safety Authority in Papua New Guinea. Dii has worked over the years with AMSA at a regional level for vessel tracking, including participating in the AusCDC (a regional long range identification and tracking data centre) and the sharing of AIS data in the Torres Strait area.
NMSA is looking to increase its coverage area through a AIS shore station implementation program that will include additional capability. In addition, noting the value of the information for trend analysis, identifying traffic patterns and incident analysis discussions include data storage and retrieval.
The meetings include discussion and sharing of information on vessel tracking initiatives, looking at the technical aspects of AIS shore station network implementation; vessel tracking data display on the Craft Tracking System (CTS); Satellite AIS developments; and the use of vessel tracking data. After two intensive days at AMSA, Dii will be heading to Townsville to meet with Mick Bishop and tour REEFVTS.
