The use of batteries is an emerging means of power that some ships are considering or are even using. As DNV GL informs, today there are 352 ships confirmed with battery installations. This number is expected to increase until 2026 From 2020, the number of ships that will be running on batteries and are under construction will be 153.

The world’s largest plug-in hybrid vessel, Color Hybrid, received the title of 'Ship of the Year 2019'. Ulstein Group CEO Gunvor Ulstein received the Award from HRH Crown Prince Haakon of Norway, during the Nor-Shipping exhibition on 4 June 2019. It will feature a battery package of 4.7 MWh, thus being able to travel 12 nautical miles only on battery power, charged with shore power in Sandefjord.

Corvus Energy, a Canadian manufacturer of energy storage systems, announced that it will launch a new battery for cruise ships, Ro-pax and ro-ro with unlimited capacity. According to the company, the Corvus Blue Whale is a fit to applications requiring low charge or discharge rate, in combination with high energy demand.

The world’s most powerful fully-electric ferry will soon start passenger operations. Namely, the Ellen E-ferry was christened by Danfoss Communications Consultant Christina Clausen, on June 1. The vessel has a 4.3 MWh battery pack. Ellen E-ferry will be operating on a 22 nautical mile sailing between Denmark's islands of Aero and Fynshav.

Ferry company Norled and the shipyard Westcon have signed a contract for the construction of two new ferries. One of them will be the world's first car ferry that sails on hydrogen and the other will be a battery-powered ferry. The two ferries are expected to be ready in March and May 2021. 

According to Trine Heinemann, project co-ordinator for the EU Horizon 2020 funded project, E-ferry breaks many barriers, as its route covers a 22-nautical mile, it will be able to sail to longer distances in comparison to other electric ferries, it will also have the largest battery pack installed at sea, and it won't have emergency back-up generator.

Corvus Energy will supply the energy storage system for battery-hybrid RTG cranes by CCCC Shanghai Equipment Engineering. The order is for retrofit and newbuild deliveries in Chinese ports. The new hybrid powered port cranes are expected to provide significant benefits. The hybrid powered port cranes are powered primarily from a battery package, leading in fuel savings of up to 65%.

United European Car Carriers, jointly owned by Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) and Wallenius Lines, has signed a contract to build two new generation PCTC with China Ship Building Trading Co., Ltd and Jiangnan Shipyard Group Co. Ltd. The newbuilding contract also includes options for two more ships, and the first one is planned for delivery in 2021.

A Canadian manufacturer of energy storage systems signed a contract according to which it will be provided with the world's largest battery package for hybrid-powered vessels. The technology will be installed onboard Havila Kystruten’s environmentally-friendly coastal vessels.

At the start of 2019, Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG and its partners started research and development work on the publicly funded FRESH project at its Container Terminal Altenwerder. FRESH stands for flexibility management and control reserve provision of heavy goods vehicles in the harbour. The aim of the research is to incorporate the battery capacities of the automated guided container transport vehicles (AGVs) that are in use at CTA into the German energy network as flexible storage units that contribute to the grid stability of the power supply.
