At the start of 2019, Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG and its partners started research and development work on the publicly funded FRESH project at its Container Terminal Altenwerder. FRESH stands for flexibility management and control reserve provision of heavy goods vehicles in the harbour. The aim of the research is to incorporate the battery capacities of the automated guided container transport vehicles (AGVs) that are in use at CTA into the German energy network as flexible storage units that contribute to the grid stability of the power supply.

Ice, a marine design company, in light of a customer's demand, recently developed a design for an all-electric ferry that will be able to carry 200 passengers and 45 cars. The electric ferry is another example of the company to serve technology demands in the maritime sector.

A new ferry that will combine energy efficiency, flexibility and optimised space availability, will soon start operation between Umeå in Sweden and Vaasa in Finland. The ferry will have been constructed by 2021 and will run mainly on LNG. The ship will also be able to burn biogas, while it will incorporate battery power to reduce its emissions while on port.

The ships Cruise Roma and Cruise Barcelona, ​​from the Grimaldi Group, which cover the Barcelona-Porto Torres-Civitavecchia line, have started a process of lengthening and total rehabilitation. This has as a goal to achieve greater cargo capacity, while they also aim to reduce their emissions and become zero emission ships during their stay in port.

Foreship published an infographic, describing a 5-steps solution to use batteries onboard. Namely, batteries can provide 15% in fuels saving, as well as 30% lower maintenance costs. According to the infographic, the average lifetime of ships batteries is 5 to 10 years.

Eco Marine Power (EMP), in cooperation with Masterbulk Pte. Ltd. (Masterbulk), has announced that an UltraBattery(UB) battery pack, which was manufactured by the Furukawa Battery Company (Furukawa Battery), has been installed on the large general cargo ship, ‘MV Panamana’.

Siemens will supply a lithium-ion battery solution for offshore drilling rig. With this, West Mira will become the world's first drilling rig to operate using a hybrid battery power solution. The battery aspires to reduce fuel consumption by 12% and CO2 emissions by 15%.

Thailand's first all-electric ferry recently started operation. The 40-passenger ship is part of a fleet of ferries operated by Bangkok Metropolitan Authority (BMA). It will operate on a five-kilometer route daily between Hua Lampjong and Thewes Pier.

Rolls-Royce announced that it is launching a lithium-ion based energy storage system for ships. SAVe Energy is a liquid cooled battery system with a modular design that scales according to energy and power requirements. SAVe Energy complies with international legislations for low and zero emission propulsion systems.
