The International Transport Workers’ Federation UK has granted funds to Nigeria through the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) to construct a Seafarers Recreation Centre in collaboration with the Nigeria Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA).
The grant was approved after a thorough assessment of Nigeria’s suitability, and the centre aims to benefit not only Nigerian seafarers but also those in the West African region and beyond. The Seafarers Recreation Centre, once completed, will serve as a significant infrastructural development for seafarers’ welfare in Nigeria, providing a space for social interaction and mental health improvement for those spending extended periods at sea.
The Head of ITF Seafarers Trust Fund, Katie Higginbottom, commended MWUN and NIMASA for their commitment to seafarers’ well-being during a meeting with the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, in Lagos.
Meanwhile, the Minister expressed appreciation for the foreign fund investment in Nigeria, ensuring judicious utilization, and pledged the government’s commitment to monitor the project’s timely completion.

Dr. Bashir Jamoh, the DG of NIMASA, reiterated the agency’s dedication to seafarers’ well-being and assured that NIMASA would fulfill its obligations to the project.
Moreover, Comrade Adeyanju, the President General of MWUN, highlighted their efforts to improve seafarers’ conditions and expressed gratitude for the support from ITF and NIMASA.
