The Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP), a joint venture between MMC Group and APM Terminals, has successfully completed its first methanol bunkering operation for the Antonia Maersk, a dual-fuel methanol container vessel.
This milestone operation highlights PTP’s readiness to handle alternative marine fuels, supporting the global shift toward reduced-emission shipping. PTP Chairman Tan Sri Che Khalib Mohamad Noh noted that this marks a pivotal achievement for the port, reinforcing its position as a key regional hub while preparing for emerging fuel solutions.
Meanwhile, PTP CEO Mark Hardiman emphasized the collaborative effort with Maersk, the Malaysian Government, and various agencies in developing safety protocols, risk assessments, and operational models to ensure the smooth execution of the bunkering process.
As informed the port managed over one million TEUs monthly for six months and completed 14,036 quayside moves in a 12-hour shift in September 2024.
To remind, the port has been selected to join the Partnerships for Infrastructure (P4I) initiative. The P4I is a government-to-government decarbonisation scheme between Malaysia and Australia. Over the next five years, PTP will spend RM3 billion on upgrading its terminal footprint, including automation, digitalisation, and other port functions.
