The tanker was carrying 5,000 tons of fuel with 16 crew members onboard
Armed men haveseized a Nigerian tanker with 16 crew members onboard, carrying5,000 tons of jet fuel in the Ivory Coast port of Abidjan, officials said on Monday.
The ITRI, owned by shipowner Brila Energy, a petroleum distributor in Nigeria, was seized as it waspreparing to deposit the fuel at the port, according to a statementfrom the IvoryCoast’s government.
The ship initially had trouble docking because a sand storm reducedvisibility, a government statement said. Later, the ship’s captain radioedthe port manager to report difficulty manoeuvring. Shortly afterwards, contactwas lost with the vessel. Then ship consignee Koda Maritime informed portofficials that armed men had taken control of the tanker.
