HMM Co. is set to enhance safety management on its vessels by adopting the artificial intelligence (AI) video analysis solution DeepEyes.
As explained, DeepEyes is designed to recognize sudden incidents such as fire, smoke, lack of safety gear among workers, and falls, and promptly alert administrators. Traditionally, shipping companies relied on CCTV systems for monitoring, but these lacked alert functionalities, posing challenges to safety management.
To address this, HMM signed a supply agreement with GlobeAI, a startup founded by a professor at Chung-Ang University. The implementation of DeepEyes aims to enable swift responses to safety incidents onboard ships, preventing secondary accidents and enhancing overall safety measures.
AI applications in the shipping industry
- Fleet Management: AI can be used to optimize fleet operations and improve the efficiency of shipping routes, by analyzing data from GPS, weather and traffic.
- Predictive Maintenance: AI can be used to predict when equipment and vehicles will need maintenance, this will help to reduce downtime and save costs.
- Autonomous ships: AI can be used to develop autonomous ships that can navigate, dock, and make decisions on their own, increasing safety and efficiency in the industry.
- Cargo Optimization: AI can be used to optimize cargo loading and unloading, by analyzing data on cargo weight and volume, vessel stability, and port infrastructure.
- Risk Management: AI-based risk management systems can analyze data from various sources to identify and mitigate risks in the shipping industry, such as weather, traffic and piracy.
- Supply Chain Management: AI can be used to optimize the entire shipping process, from order management, to logistics and inventory management.
According to international news, HMM plans to install DeepEyes on one of the world’s largest container ships next month, with a capacity of 24,000 TEUs. The system will be deployed in 15 locations on the ship, including the engine room and decks. Future expansion of DeepEyes implementation will be considered after validating its effectiveness.
