The Port of Hamburg, Freeport of Riga and LMT have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen collaboration and tackle challenges in port infrastructure management across the Baltic Sea region.
As explained, the recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) marks a significant step in maritime technology cooperation between Latvia and Germany. The signatories include LMT, the Freeport of Riga, the Port of Hamburg, the Electronic Communications Office of Latvia, the Fleet of Hamburg and LVR Flote.
The objectives of the memorandum include identifying key challenges in the port and maritime sector and develop solutions in maritime digitalisation, to arrive at joint proof-of-concept (PoC) demonstrations.
To facilitate this collaboration, several working groups will be established. For example, the Port Connectivity Working Group will focus on deploying mobile network infrastructure, including private 5G networks. Meanwhile, the Smart Infrastructure and Cyber Security Working Group will concentrate on smart infrastructure monitoring, AI-driven analytics and cybersecurity.
Experts from both countries have held initial sessions to outline key tasks and priorities. Moving forward, teams will work closely to develop detailed work plans and coordinate pilot projects. As stated, these efforts will be overseen by Lennart Kinau, Head of Strategy and External Relations at the Hamburg Port Authority, along with the LMT Innovation Development team.
I am proud of this important step in Latvian-German cooperation. By addressing the common challenges in the Baltic Sea with digital innovations in maritime technology, we are not only strengthening economic ties between the two countries but also setting a precedent for collective action on important issues affecting the common future of maritime affairs.
…said Viktors Valainis, Minister of Economy of Latvia.
In addition, Kaspars Ozoliņš, Member of the Board, LVR Flote, echoed this sentiment by highlighting that the expert working groups represent a practical move toward solving common issues in port infrastructure and digital innovation.
Ingmārs Pūķis, Vice President, LMT, added that this cooperation highlights the critical role of ports in national and international infrastructure and stated that “modern technologies not only enhance safety and defense but also boost efficiency and adaptability.”
