A fire aboard the Indonesian tanker Elisabet Satu off the coast of Bali resulted in the deaths of five crew members and left 15 others injured.
The incident occurred on 7 August near Gili Tepekong in the Karangasem district as the ship was en route to West Nusa Tenggara province. The fire reportedly ignited around 3:00 AM local time, with initial explosions emanating from the crew’s living quarters.
According to local news, eyewitness accounts describe a chaotic scene as the vessel experienced a blackout following the first explosion. Rescue efforts were promptly initiated, with fireboats dispatched to assist in extinguishing the flames and evacuating the crew.
Reports indicate that five crew members, including oilers and an engineer died, while three others sustained critical injuries with burns covering most of their bodies.
The Elisabet Satu was carrying a cargo of various fuels, including diesel and biodiesel, at the time of the incident. The vessel was reported to have a total of 21 crew members on board, of whom 15 were successfully evacuated.
The cause of the fire and explosions is currently under investigation by Indonesian authorities.
