On May 21, 2025, China Merchants Heavy Industry successfully launched the world’s first methanol dual-fuel car carrier with a capacity of 9,300 CEUs at its Nantong shipyard.
Commissioned by China Merchants Energy Shipping Co., Ltd. (CMES), the vessel represents a significant breakthrough in the development of large-scale green and intelligent RoRo (roll-on/roll-off) ships. Measuring 219.9 meters in length and 37.7 meters in beam, the ship features methanol dual-fuel main and auxiliary engines, boilers, and a fuel supply system. It is has a design speed of 19 knots.
This vessel is currently the largest methanol-powered RoRo ship, and marks the first of six methanol dual-fuel car carriers ordered by CMES.
The company began its green fleet expansion with two 9,300-CEU ships ordered in early 2023, followed by four additional 7,800-CEU vessels in late 2023. All are being built by China Merchants Heavy Industry, with deliveries scheduled between 2025 and 2026.
