Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore (BV) has validated the Blue Visby Solution, a platform that reduces shipping emissions by about 15% by optimizing vessel arrival times to avoid unnecessary idling at ports.
As explained, this method allows ships to slow down instead of rushing and waiting, cutting fuel use without new fuels or hardware. This approach does not rely on new fuels or hardware, but rather on a systemic optimization of the ocean passage, contractual refinements and a methodology for sharing the financial consequences.
The optimization of port arrivals has been gaining popularity in industry discussions over the past few years. For instance, earlier this month, GMF’s report, ‘Port call optimisation: A pathway to reducing waiting times and emissions,’ highlighted that port call optimisation is a practical, immediate, and collaborative step the industry can take to improve efficiency and accelerate progress towards decarbonisation.
In late 2024, a new study by UMAS and the UCL Energy Institute has found that optimising port arrivals to account for port congestion and waiting times could reduce voyage emissions by up to 25% for some vessel types.
BV independently reviewed Blue Visby’s method for estimating fuel and emissions savings, confirming its accuracy and reliability by comparing real voyage data with optimized scenarios. The review included comparing actual voyage data (AIS routes and speed profiles) with Blue Visby’s optimized algorithm-generated scenarios.
The collaboration illustrates how industry-wide coordination can unlock efficiencies that benefit all stakeholders. We are proud to contribute our expertise to initiatives that make the decarbonization of shipping both credible and achievable

Haris Zografakis, Blue Visby Consortium co-ordinator, stated that a key aspect of the Blue Visby Solution was its neutrality and integrity in estimating avoided emissions. He added that the technical evaluation and validation by Bureau Veritas demonstrated the hard work and dedication of both the Bureau Veritas and Blue Visby teams, as well as the support from the Blue Visby Consortium.
