The Panama-flagged Loyalty Hong bulk carrier is stranded with its crew on board at Lyttelton Port, New Zealand due engine room flooding.
According to local news, after the engine room flooded, the vessel’s engines were rendered inoperable. The accommodation room is powered by an emergency generator, allowing the crew to cook and clean. Completing a 19-day voyage from Albany, Australia, the ship arrived in Lyttelton on March 5th.
The Harbormaster’s Office of Environment Canterbury confirmed that the ship is unable to supply normal power throughout the vessel due to damage to breaker boards and switches. Details of how exactly the fault occurred were under investigation.
A spokesperson for the Lyttelton Port Company stated that they were working with the ship’s owner’s representative and were awaiting their next steps. Repair costs are the responsibility of the owner.
