An MSC containership grounded off Batam after departing Singapore. According to reports, there are no injuries and the vessel is now sitting on an even keel.
As relevant authorities noted, an evacuation process was underway, raising concerns that the 24 crew were being removed from “MSC Faith”. Hpwever, it was later clarified that the officials were referring to the process to secure and refloat the vessel.
While in Batam waters the containership ran aground in waters with a depth of 8 meters. Some reports are saying the ship had a draft of 12 meters.
A patrol boat was attending to the ship, and an initial survey showed no leaks or oil in the water. Moreover, all crew was reported safe.
In addition, an underwater survey will inspect the hull and scope the extent of the damage.
The grounding took place outside the shipping lane, but traffic is being advised to proceed with caution in the area.
