International Container Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI) formally launched two new berths which for the first time offer the port of Umm Qasr, Iraq’s main dry cargo port, the ability to handle container vessels of up to 14,000TEU.

The working group Cruise 2030 has started operating on finding ways to help shaping the cruise industry of the future. The kick-off meeting took place in Venice, on October 18, aiming to establish a common platform of strategies to support the development of the cruise industry sustainably, in order to match the needs of the industry with the demands of the cities and territories.

BIMCO has made two proposals to the IMO, in order to pave the way for easy exchange of port logistic operational data and allow for real-time updates between ship and shore. The two proposals aim to limit the administrative burden for the shipping industry, as well as to ensure better communication between ships, ports, terminals and all other parties involved through the  harmonization of the data model used.

Global Container Terminals (GCT), a container terminal operator in North America, has joined the TradeLens supply chain platform. By taking part in TradeLens, GCT aims to securely connect with supply chain partners including ocean carriers, beneficial cargo owners, and railways.

Malaysia supports the plan by the Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) to expand its operations and capacity. As Transport Minister Anthony Loke said, the Port will play a crucial role in attracting investments in several sectors to the southern part of Malaysia.

The British Ports Association (BPA) and Currency UK, published a report on the decline in the value of the pound. The publication plots sterling against the US dollar and the euro and explores three aspects on the economy: exports, energy and infrastructure.

A EUR 187 million (USD 205.4 million) contract was signed by Poland’s Maritime Office in Gdynia, for the development of a shipping channel through the Vistula Spit connecting the Vistula Lagoon with the Bay of Gdańsk. A channel, two breakwaters, two rotating bridges over the lock, four sluice gates, landscapes, buildings, roads and their soil reinforcement, and even a 190-hectare artificial island within the Vistula Lagoon are to be developed.
