As the global marine fuel mix grows, becoming more varied and consequently more complex in terms of fuel management, there is a potential increasing risk to vessels, crew and the environment, from the possible impact of poor-quality fuels, argues Steve Bee, Group Commercial Director, VPS.

CIMAC Fuels Working Group (WG7), in cooperation with ISO/TC 28/SC 4/WG6 (ISO 8217 committee) has published a paper to address questions that are expected to arise around the new  ISO 8217:2024 standard. 

The eagerly awaited ISO 8217:2024 standard has been published and is available for purchase on ISO's official website. Bill Stamatopoulos, Global Business Development Director at VeriFuel, highlights the advantages of this new edition and explains the substantial changes it brings to fuel grades and parameters.

On May 30rd, the ISO announced that the eagerly awaited ISO 8217:2024 is now published and can be purchased from their website. This marine fuel specification standard has undergone significant revision taking the industry needs into consideration as well as most recent industry experience and knowledge.

During the 2024 GREEN4SEA Athens Forum, Bill Stamatopoulos, Global Business Development Director at VeriFuel, delivered a comprehensive presentation on the anticipated ISO 8217:2024 standard.

ISO informed that it has published the 'ISO/PAS 23263:2019 Petroleum products — Fuels (class F) — Considerations for fuel suppliers and users regarding marine fuel quality in view of the implementation of maximum 0,50 % sulphur in 2020'.

Following a late June alert regarding contaminated bunkers that were supplied in St. Petersburg, Russia, the Lloyd’s Register Fuel Oil Bunkering Analysis and Advisory Service (FOBAS) issued an update on 12 July, confirming presence of Carbon Tetrachloride in the contaminated fuels. 

On March 27 Toyota Tsusho Petroleum filed a complaint against Nustar Energy Services at a US Court. The file regarded alleged off-spec bunkers, and TTP seeks $421,784.94 from NES through two claims. Namely, on April 19, 2018, NES supplied 840 metric tonnes (mt) of IFO 380 to the Singapore-flagged chemical tanker 'M/V Beatrice' at the Port of Houston.

Fuel quality and safety was high on the agenda during MSC 100 in early December. On the occasion, IUMI highlighted that biofuels are not properly catered for under the ISO standard 8217 and urged IMO to encourage ISO to embark on the urgent amendment of the ISO 8217 to deal with biofuels and the 2020 sulphur cap.
