As the IMO's 2020 Sulphur Cap is approaching, Hapag Lloyd is taking steps towards the ultimate compliance with the new regulations, introducing an  IMO2020 Transition Charge (ITC) for short-term contracts as of 1 December 2019.

On behalf of German ship operator Reederei Nord, a team from ETH Zurich investigated shipping activities in the North and Baltic Seas as well as the infrastructure, costs of new fuels and storage options, in a bid to map out “routes” towards emission-​free shipping.

Shipping company A.P. Moller-Maersk collaborated with Wallenius Wilhelmsen ,the Copenhagen University and other high profile customers, for the development of LEO fuel, a blend of lignin and ethanol. The LEO is considered to be future low-carbon marine fuel and a potential solution for sustainable shipping.

In light of the upcoming 2020 sulphur cap, the shipping industry is on the run of finding compliant low-sulphur fuels; Yet, some state that the demand for high sulphur fuel will not be extinct as those who will use scrubbers will continue making use of it.

The best opportunities for decarbonization of shipping lie in finding new sustainable energy sources, says a new study by Danish shipping giant A.P. Moller - Maersk and Lloyds Register which identifies alcohol, biomethane, and ammonia as the best positioned fuels for research and development into net zero fuels.

The company put together the "IMO 2020 team", a transition team that focused on finding the ideal fuels to be able to keep up with the upcoming regulations.  

Damen Shipyards Group and Maris Projects collaborated to address the issue of invasive seaweed in the Caribbean. The partners are assessing the viability of turning the seaweed into methane for energy purposes. The consortium will present the developments of their solution between 24 and 26 October.

Ammonia and hydrogen are promising potential fuels of the future in a decarbonized shipping industry, which has to switch to alternative, zero carbon fuels to meet the targets of the initial IMO strategy on reduction of GHG emissions from ships, an IMO symposium on sulphur 2020 and alternative fuels heard on 18 October.

Shell Marine has published a new White Paper offering critical guidance on cylinder oils and engine care to transition successfully through the IMO sulphur cap from 1st January 2020. The ‘IMO 2020 Ready’ paper sets out the commercial, operational and technical challenges for operators before, during and after the regulatory deadline.

IMO has gathered major shipping players in a Symposium on 'IMO 2020 and Alternative fuels', highlighting the importance of partnership within the industry, discussing the role that alternative fuels could have in the path towards decarbonization and raising awareness on the IMO 2020 sulphur cap regulation.
