South Korean shipbuilding giant Samsung Heavy Industries announced that it began the construction of an LNG system test facility as it looks to boost its market competitiveness. SHI invested in R&D (research and development) facility to strengthen its market position.
The facility is planned to be completed by December 2020.
Specifically, on June 10, SHI conducted a ceremony in honour of the industry-first LNG system test facility at its Geoje shipyard.
When the facility is completed, SHI will be able to conduct its own evaluation of innovative LNG core technologies, such as liquefaction of gases and cryogenic storage systems which are used in vessels and offshore plants.

This would accelerate the application of next-generation technologies, as SHI reported.
In the meantime, the shipbuilder will boost local LNG know-how development and utilize the facility as a training site for the operation of LNG carriers.
The facility follows SHI’s goal to improve its place in the market industry and become self-reliant in the LNG shipbuilding segment.
So far this year, Samsung Heavy has secured orders for ten LNG carriers – the world’s largest number of orders in this sector.
