Five crew members from a fishing vessel appeared in front of the court in Holstebro, Denmark to be charged with manslaughter.
The court appearance is related to an incident that took place onboard a cutter in the North Sea on 30 January 2023 where a fisherman died in what has been described by police as suspicious circumstances.
More specifically, on that day, the police received a report that a crew member on a cutter located in the North Sea was unresponsive. The lifeless man was flown ashore by helicopter and pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.
According to the Central West and West Jutland Police, “the circumstances of the death meant that the police considered the death suspicious.”
As it further explained, “due to the weather, it was not possible to get the ship and crew into port. It has also not been possible to get the police on board the ship. After the cutter arrived in port, the crew has been questioned.”
After their arrest, the five men appeared before the Court in Holstebro, where they pleaded not guilty to the charges. The hearing lasted more than seven hours according to Danish media, and the five men remained in custody.
The men will remain in custody for the next four weeks, but they have appealed the ruling.
