AMSA released ‘Fishing for Safety: Creating a Safety Management System‘, a 16-minute video showing easy to understand steps, real-world stories and experiences of why an effective safety management system (SMS) is essential when working in the fishing industry.
Based on AMSA’s Safety Management System (SMS) Guidelines, this video also addresses general Work, Health and Safety (WH&S) requirements.
Fishing for Safety was produced via a collaboration between Southern Rocklobster Limited Clean Green program and AMSA, as part of the ongoing project called ‘Southern Rock Lobster Clean Green Program—revision, digitisation and extension across the supply chain’.
Fishing is considered one of the most dangerous occupations in the world and, in spite of improvements in technology, the loss of life in the fisheries sector is unacceptably high.
In order to improve the safety of fishers and fishing vessels, IMO has established, over the years, various initiatives, culminating with the adoption of the Cape Town Agreement of 2012.
