A major fire broke out aboard the bulk carrier Sider Olympia on 13 April, triggering a large-scale emergency response involving multiple agencies at Northfleet Port, United Kingdom.
Firefighters from both Kent Fire and Rescue Service and the London Fire Brigade quickly responded to the scene deploying a wide range of resources including fire engines, a high-volume pump, an aerial ladder platform, a height vehicle, technical rescue teams, drones, and marine specialists. As reported, the blaze originated in the ship’s large storage bunkers.
In addition, a bulk water carrier, water safety unit and fire boats from London Fire Brigade were in attendance alongside a volunteer response team offering welfare support to crews and other partners.
Firefighting teams equipped with breathing apparatus also boarded the vessel to cool the upper deck and contain the fire. The situation was brought under control and all crew members were confirmed safe. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
London firefighters have been mobilised alongside crews from Kent Fire and Rescue Service to a ship fire near Gravesend. This includes deploying one of the brigade’s fire boats from Lambeth River Station to the scene. Crews are also helping to provide fire cover in parts of Kent that border London whilst local crews respond to the ship fire.
