The vessel Altera Wave is is built to DNV GL’s Battery Power notation and has a battery pack of 1808kWh installed. Based on its latest trial, the vessel is able to maintain 6-7 knots for almost 20 minutes on batteries only.
Specifically, Christian Fjell, Chairman Of The Board, Stavanger Shipowner’s Association, referred to the vessel as “the Tesla of the North Sea”.
The ship is built to DNVGL’s Battery Power notation and has a battery pack of 1808kWh installed.
The trial was successful and revealed that the vessel was able to maintain 6-7 knots for almost 20 minutes on batteries only.
The main purpose of the batteries is to reduce fuel consumption and emissions by peak shaving, prevent black-outs, and improve safety during DP operations by replacing power from one generator if needed.
Back in 2019, DNV GL reported that there were 352 ships confirmed with battery installations. This number is expected to increase until 2026.
