A recently published report by the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) and commissioned by the environmental lobby group Stand.earth, aimed to ‘examine the lifecycle GHG emissions from marine fuels, including a previously poorly understood source of climate emissions from LNG-powered ships- the unintentional releases of the climate super-pollutant methane from ship engines, known as methane slip.’

The World Meteorological Organization reports of a new GHG-emissions level that "have reached another new record high", meaning that future generations will experience the severe impacts of climate change, including rising temperatures, extreme weather conditions, sea level increase, as well as disruption to marine and land ecosystems.

Damen Shipyards Group and Maris Projects collaborated to address the issue of invasive seaweed in the Caribbean. The partners are assessing the viability of turning the seaweed into methane for energy purposes. The consortium will present the developments of their solution between 24 and 26 October.

Scientists from Tomsk Polytechnic University along with other Russian Universities and research centres are part of the Eastern Arctic expedition and recently recorded a big amount of methane emission in the area of East Siberian Sea.

The IMO's GHG targets for 2030 and 2050 may seem unachievable, but Dr Elizabeth Lindstad, Chief Scientist, Energy and Transport, at SINTEF, Norway, believes that a substantial reduction is achievable, even with today’s existing technologies.

Oil major BP announced that it will deploy continuous measurement of methane emissions in its future BP-operated oil and gas processing projects as part of its ambitious programme to detect, measure and reduce methane emissions.  

US Rep. Diana DeGette introduced legislation to reduce the large amounts of methane pollution and waste that are being released into the atmosphere each year by oil and gas producers across the country. The bill would mandate oil and gas producers to capture 85% of all gas produced on public lands within three years of enactment, and 99% of all gas produced on such lands within five years of enactment.
