Maersk reported that one of its containerships experienced main engine failure and began drifting in the Gibraltar Strait on January 29, 2020, adding that because of this difficulty the vessel is expected to be delayed.
Specifically, the 3,078 TEU containership Maersk Batur departed from Algeciras, Spain, sailing towards Neward, the USA.
The company reported that the vessel suffered main engine failure while on its way to Newark.
The company informed that
The Nautical department is sailing the vessel to tow her in Algeciras Port in order to start inspections and fix issue.
It is further noted that after the information they received and because of the incident, the vessel is expected to be delayed, as contingency is being controlled.
Overall, engine failure may probably be costly to the operator due to delays at the vessel’s planned route, machinery damage or even if assistance is needed from towing companies. Main engine failure could also be the reason of a collision as a result of inadequate communication with nearby vessels.
