Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. (“K” LINE) has announced a trial of the new network service “NexusWave,” developed by Inmarsat Maritime.
According to K LINE’s statement, this service integrates multiple high-speed networks in real time to enable continuous ship-to-shore communication, enhancing digitalization in ship operations, improving environmental responsiveness, and supporting the welfare of seafarers. The trial is set to commence in October.
NexusWave, launched in May, is a bonded multi-dimensional network that offers high-speed connectivity, unlimited data, and global coverage with a secure infrastructure. It seamlessly combines Global Xpress (GX) Ka-band, low-Earth orbit (LEO) services, and coastal LTE service, supplemented by an L-band layer for added resiliency. The service also incorporates enterprise-grade firewall security.
The “K” LINE Group aims to enhance both onboard and ship-to-shore communication systems, fostering a safer and more comfortable working environment for seafarers.
The 2023 SEAFiT Crew Survey also indicated that internet connectivity is crucial for wellness at sea. Consequently, the SAFETY4SEA petition has been launched to urge industry stakeholders to support the initiative for free internet access at sea.
Akihiro Fujimaru, Managing Executive Officer of “K” LINE, emphasized the importance of fast and reliable connectivity for improving safety, quality, and onboard workstyles, while also supporting crew well-being through better communication with family and friends.
Additionally, Ben Palmer OBE, President of Inmarsat Maritime, expressed honor in partnering with “K” LINE, highlighting their commitment to leveraging advanced technology to maintain a competitive edge in the maritime industry.
