On 24 June, a deadly fire broke out aboard the Indonesian-flagged Floating Storage and Offloading (FSO) vessel Federal II during maintenance work at ASL Shipyard in Batam, Indonesia.
The incident resulted in four fatalities and left five others injured, four of whom sustained serious burns and were hospitalized. One individual suffered minor injuries.
According to local police, the fire ignited while workers were engaged in cutting steel plates on the vessel. Preliminary reports suggest that a leak of flammable gas or vapor may have triggered the blaze, contributing to its rapid spread.
The shipyard’s internal safety team managed to bring the fire under control and now authorities have launched a formal investigation to determine the exact cause of the incident and assess compliance with safety protocols.
As reported, the vessel was undergoing maintenance at the time of the accident.
