The Liberia-flagged car carrier Morning Midas has sunk in the North Pacific following a fire that broke out onboard on June 3, 2025.
The ship went down in international waters roughly 360 nautical miles from land and in 5,000 meters of water. The fire, believed to have started on a deck carrying electric vehicles, intensified despite the crew’s efforts and suppression systems. The 22 crewmembers were safely evacuated by the nearby containership COSCO Hellas.
The Morning Midas was en route from Yantai, China, to Lázaro Cárdenas, Mexico, carrying more than 3,000 vehicles, including approximately 70 fully electric and 681 hybrid models. Salvors from Resolve Marine were dispatched to the scene, but heavy weather and ongoing water ingress ultimately led to the vessel sinking on June 23 at approximately 16:35 local time (UTC -9).
As informed, two salvage tugs equipped with pollution control gear remain on site to monitor for environmental impact, and a specialized pollution response vessel is en route.
