South Korean shipbuilder Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) unveiled a world’s first robot using standardized big data and artificial intelligence to support metalworking, including cold working and hot working processes.
Named ‘Goknuri’, the robot is expected to enable standardizing work contents while storing and utilizing the know-how and performance of existing workers as data. In addition, the accumulated data can be used for the construction of other ships using artificial intelligence technology in the future.
Meanwhile, the robot seeks to dramatically improve the working environment for shipbuilding workers, eliminating their expose to noise and musculoskeletal diseases, DSME noted.
This robot operation is feasible for unskilled personnel through a simple training of 2-3 days.
The company started to develop this robot system three years ago. The system went through an internal demonstration in September and is currently operating in the Okpo Shipyard.
With this automation system, we are looking to improve the working environment and improve productivity at the same time,
