BEHALA informed that the construction of the world’s first emission-free push boat will start in October 2019. The ship is expected to have been completed by the fourth quarter of 2020. The boat will be used mainly for transporting goods on the Berlin-Hamburg and inner-city transport routes.
The ship will be named ELEKTRA and behind this project are the companies BEHALA (port and logistics service provider), shipyard Herrmann Barthel, BALLARD Power Systems (fuel cells), Anleg (hydrogen tanks), ship electronics Rostock, EST Floattech (accumulators) and Imperial logistics (shipping company).
This project aims to align with the climate policy objectives of the Federal Republic of Germany regarding inland shipping.

The ELEKTRA will serve as a role model being an emission-free ship, in particularly within sensitive regions, such as Berlin, Hamburg, and the Rhine-Ruhr region.
At the same time with the construction and testing of ELEKTRA, accompanying infrastructural measures in the area of electricity and hydrogen supply will be conducted in the ELEKTRA sailing area for inland navigation.
The project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI) and supervised by Projektträger Jülich (PTJ) and the National Organization for Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology (NOW).
