On 8 April, the cargo vessel Hosei Crown, collided with a Vietnamese fishing boat in the Gulf of Bắc Bộ, Vietnam, resulting in four fatalities.
The cargo ship struck the fishing boat, causing it to capsize and upon receiving distress signals, the Vietnam Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center (VMRCC) instructed the Hosei Crown to deploy buoys and initiate an immediate search and rescue operation. The VMRCC also dispatched its SAR 411 rescue ship to the scene to assist with the operation.
However, the collision resulted in the sinking of the fishing vessel and the tragic loss of four lives.
Moreover, maritime alerts were swiftly issued and nearby vessels were mobilized to aid in the rescue efforts. The VMRCC coordinated with local forces and notified the National Civil Defense Steering Committee and the Vietnam Maritime and Waterways Administration to oversee the ongoing rescue operations.
By approximately 9:10 AM local time, eight of the twelve fishermen who had fallen overboard were rescued and the bodies of the four deceased individuals were recovered.
All survivors and the recovered bodies were transported by the SAR 411 to Hai Phong’s Central Pier, where they were handed over to local authorities.
Furthermore, at the time of the incident the area was experiencing southeast winds of levels 3-4 and foggy conditions, which may have contributed to the collision.
VMRCC in collaboration with relevant agencies has launched an investigation to determine the cause of the accident.
