The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) has detained a cargo ship for anchoring without permission 13 nautical miles northwest of Pulau Jarak on 17 March.
The ship, operated by an Egyptian captain and crew from Russia, Ukraine, and the Philippines, failed to provide an anchoring permit and did not report its arrival in Malaysian waters. The case is being investigated under the Merchant Shipping Ordinance 1952, with penalties of up to USD 22,593 or two years in prison.
Two crew members were brought to the Maritim Negeri Perak Headquarters for further investigation.
In a separate incident, Maritim Malaysia Negeri Perak’s patrol boat detained a Local Fishing Vessel (VNT) violating license conditions by fishing in a restricted area. The crew’s identification documents, including those of three Myanmar nationals, were also found to be suspicious. This case is being investigated under the Fisheries Act 1985 and the Immigration Act 1959/63.
The public is urged to report maritime law violations to the emergency line at 999 or the Maritim Negeri Perak Operations Center at 05-683 2254.
