The Mission to Seafarers, in cooperation with the project founder Steven Jones, have released the first edition of the Seafarers Happiness Index (SHI), which was relaunched in 2017.
The SHI initiative aims to discover seafarers’ thoughts and opinions on important welfare issues such as shore leave, wages, food, training, social interaction and family contact.

The first edition says:
Measuring how happy people are about the various elements of their working life gives a picture of the real successes and problems within seafaring. It also provides learning opportunities to improve and develop.
The study presents interesting and thought-provoking statistics. For example, the current average Seafarer Happiness level is 6.25 out of 10. Older surveys in 2015 and 2016, reported the respective levels to be 6.46 and 6.41, indicating a downward trend, which needs to be addressed in order to mitigate this decline.
The research data will be collected on a quarterly basis and the trends that will be identified will be reported in next SHI publications.
