The implementation of anti-pollution measures in the area of the sunken Grande America were halted, because north-east winds of 15 knots, cross-seas and a swell of 2.5 to 3 metres on March 25th prevented the procedures.
Specifically, the rough weather conditions were expected to continue for the next three days.
Some vessels looking after the anti-pollution force will benefit from the pause of the procedures, as the next three days they will make logistical stopovers at the port of La Rochelle.
In addition, the vessels will unload the pollutants recovered at sea.
Island Pride, chartered by the shipowner to inspect the wreck of the Grande America, arrived in Vigo on March 25th and should reach the sinking area by the end of the week.
Generally, the Grande America was caught on fire on March 10 and eventually sank.
The reasons that caused the fire remain unknown. The vessel’s sinking resulted to pollution, as according to Premar Atlantique an oil slick was detected at the area of the incident.
In the meantime, it was reported that Grande America was also transporting 2.100 vehicles, as 190 trucks, 22 buses or 64 construction machines. Later on, it was found out that along with the vessel sinking, four Porsche 911 GT2 RS sports cars ended up at the bottom of the sea.
Concluding, it was later revealed that the vessel was transmitting 1.050 tonnes of dangerous goods that are now at the bottom of the ocean.
