Northern Lights, a key carbon capture and storage (CCS) project, has completed the first round of sea trials for its new CO₂ transport vessel, Northern Pioneer.
Furthermore, alongside progress on the Northern Pioneer, Northern Lights celebrated the completion of its Øygarden onshore facilities, essential to its CO₂ storage network. The Northern Pioneer, the first of five ships, is set to begin sailing in European waters soon. Four more vessels are under construction, with the first two set for delivery in 2024, advancing Europe’s efforts in industrial carbon reduction.
To remind, earlier this year the initial pair of LNG-powered, wind-assisted vessels for the Northern Lights initiative were inaugurated in China. The construction of these unique vessels commenced in November 2022 at Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co. (DSIC) in China. By early 2024, the first two ships were equipped with specially designed 7,500 cubic meters cargo tanks tailored for transporting liquefied CO2.
