This video, published by CHIRP Maritime, presents an example of total lack of safety culture. Namely, the video depicts a crewmember hanging from an accommodation ladder on the outboard side of a coastal ferry, trying to paint the side of the ship.
The incident took place in a small port in the Mediterranean. There, while the crewmember was hanging from the ladder painting, he was not wearing any safety equipment.

In addition, an officer is present while the incident is taking place, with the man using one hand to hang from the ladder and the other to paint the side of the ship.
As CHIRP notes, this was “an accident just waiting to happen”, while it added that the method and total absence of PPE are obvious.
I served in the Royal Navy during the 1970s and 1980s. We did not have safety gear, often had to paint for long periods, in conditions and weather far worse than was shown in this video. As for this video, it may only have been a quick touch up that lasted not more than ten seconds…
