The achievements of the Torres Strait Marine Safety Program was among the topics presented at this week’s Maritime 2014 conference. The program has been running since 2006 to increase the safety and survival of people operating small boats in the Torres Strait Region.
Through this initial program, the need to build community capacity and assist Aboriginal and Torres Strait islanders into a maritime related career became apparent and the Torres Strait Maritime Pathways Project (TSMPP) was created. Since November 2013, 188 students have started the nationally accredited training course, which aims to provide Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders with maritime and maritime-related vocational career pathways.
This course is offered through a partnership with the Australian Maritime College at the University of Tasmania with a tailored program developed for participants. Training is undertaken in the Torres Strait as well as the Australian Maritime College in Launceston, Tasmania.
