An £80,000 network of air pollution monitors, funded by the Port of London Authority, is now in place, ready to record the effect of emissions locally from cruise ships docking in Greenwich this summer. The eight monitoring stations are located close to the Greenwich Ship Tier landing stage. They will capture data all day long, with the raw data available at the websites of both the PLA and Breathe London.

The UK Transport secretary is back in the High Court, on a case related to his decision to award more than £100 million in contracts to three ferry companies under no-deal Brexit plans. UK-based P&O Ferries sued the British Government over the settlement, claiming that its rival, Eurotunnel, was given a competitive advantage.

The British Ports Association has written to the UK’s Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Liz Truss MP, urging that the upcoming Comprehensive Spending Review to consider how to replicate the EU's schemes that provide investment for the transport and infrastructure network. The BPA also called for new mechanisms to be created to help UK projects benefit from European Investment Bank loans.

The Port of Tyne informed that it is increasing its offer to potential offshore wind manufacturers. Namely, the Port has almost completed the final phase of a major investment programme to infill Tyne Dock and increase its commercial property portfolio. A £3 million programme will complete Tyne Dock infill, leading to an additional 30 acres of land with deep-sea quayside access to support offshore wind.

The UK Chamber applauds UK Ship Register's (UKSR) changes, according to which owners from a broader group of countries will be able to register their vessels in the UK. UKSR announced its decision on expanding its ownership eligibility, enabling more shipping companies from around the globe to flag to the UK.

In April 2019 the Environmental Audit Committee (EAC) in the UK launched a new research to understand the impact and threat to biosecurity from invasive species where the UK is witnessing a rise in the introduction of non-native species, with damaging effects from invasive species estimated to cost almost £1.8 billion a year.

ABP has commissioned crane manufacturers, Kocks Ardelt Kranbau, to supply three new high-capacity grabbing cranes for the Immingham Bulk Terminal. The cranes are expected to be complete and online by the end of 2020. The crane purchase is part of the previously announced £65 million investment, committed by ABP to the terminal and site facilities.

An autonomous boat has successfully conducted a cargo run from the UK to Belgium. The 12m-long SEA-KIT Maxlimer sailed from West Mersea to Oostende on May 6, carrying a box of oysters. In order to navigate safely in one of the busiest shipping lanes, it relied in various technologies. The sail lasted a total of 22 hours, as the ship can move slowly at only a few knots.

The UK Government launched a Call for Evidence on safeguarding biodiversity in the UK Overseas Territories. Many Overseas Territories are important  in their ecological richness, containing over 90 per cent of the UK’s marine and terrestrial nature.They are hubs for biodiversity with approximately 3,300 species, but they are vulnerable to environmental change.
