SAFETY4SEA announced the winners of the 2019 SAFETYT4SEA Awards at a prestigious awards ceremony which successfully concluded on October the 1st at Yacht Club of Greece in Athens, the evening ahead of the SAFETY4SEA Conference. SAFETY4SEA Awards are held annually within the scope of awarding industry’s outstanding practices for Excellence, Sustainability, Training, Technology, Initiative, Personality and Leadership.

Startup UnseenLabs informed about its intentions to launch up to six more ship-tracking cubesats during 2020. The satellites aim to monitor maritime traffic, by using orbiting sensors to track vessels that turn off their AIS. Unseenlabs aspires to establish 20 to 50 satellites in low Earth orbit.

In its weekly report for 24-30 September, ReCAAP ISC informed of a total of four incidents of armed robbery against ships in Asia. From these incidents, one occurred in Indian anchorage, one in a Philippine anchorage and two in Indonesia.

The US Office of Commercial Vessel Compliance published 'Determinations for a Vessel’s Keel Laid Date or Similar Stage of Construction.' The work instruction was updated on September 20, 2019. This work instruction aims to establish the interpretations of when a vessel’s keel is considered to be laid or the vessel is at a similar stage of construction.

Following OFAC's decision on issuing sanctions against COSCO companies, many were those affected, as well as the US-listed Teekay Group that has been qualified as a 'blocked person'.
