MUA Celebrates International Women’s Day

MUA supports women seafarers The Maritime Union of Australia has today pledged support for International Women's Day.International Women's Day is celebrated across the world on March 8th each year.The day isabout acknowledging the vital role women play in enhancing economicsecurity for their families, communities and countries as awhole while recognising that significant barriers to achieving women's economic security and equality continue to exist.With just five per cent of the MUA's members currently being women, MUA Women's Liaison Officer Mich-Elle Myers said today was a timely reminder of the benefits of working in a regulated industry with unionised rates of pay."We need more women in the industry and we need to find new ways to encourage more women to work in what has traditionally been a male-dominated environment," Myers said.A report just released from the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) reveals that worldwide, women are paid 18 per cent less on average than their male counterparts at work.The report found that more unionised sectors tend to have lower pay gaps.Those with low unionisation rates and low wage levels, such as retail, hotels and restaurants tend to have higher gaps.Part of the problem is that many workers are not paid a decent ...

The Maritime Union of Australia has met with the visiting Norwegian Prime Minister The Maritime Union of Australia has met with the visiting Norwegian Prime Minister, Jens Stoltenberg, and the President of the Norwegian Seafarers' Union, Jacqueline Smith, to discuss the state of world shipping and Australia's proposed shipping reform package."Australia and Norway both have a long history of engagement in the shipping sector, with many seafarers of both nationalities serving together at sea," MUA National Secretary Paddy Crumlin said."We are delighted to welcome the Norwegian Prime Minister and representatives from the Norwegian Seafarers' Union to Australia and look forward to exchanging important information around the future of shipping."Australia and Norway have continued their strong shipping relationship over a long period and many Norwegian seafarers have settled in Australia.The respected Australian maritime trade union leader Tas (Tasnor) Bull, who was Secretary of the Waterside Workers' Federation from 1984 to 1992 was named after 'Tasmania' and 'Norway' - the places of his parents' births.MUA Deputy National Secretary Mick Doleman today addressed a Maritime Conference in Perth, where he spoke of the close relationship between the two countries, and the lessons Australia can learn from the Norwegian shipping experience."Both Australia and Norway ...
