Rice University has launched Carbon Hub, a major research initiative aiming to create a zero-emissions future in which oil and natural gas provide both clean energy and advanced materials that help house; move; clothe and feed people.
The IMO stated that its Intersessional Working Group on Reduction of GHG Emissions from Ships has made significant progress with work aiming to help achieve the ambitious targets of the initial IMO strategy regarding the reduction of GHG emissions from ships, further aiming at the decarbonization of the international shipping in this century.
Apart from the ambitious target of the 2020 Global Sulphur Cap set by the IMO, shipowners and operators must also take into considerations the greenhouse gas targets for 2030 and the emissions goals for 2050. ABS informs that the regulatory changes set for 2020, as well as those expected for 2030 and 2050, will be “more disruptive than any past environmental regulations.”
A leading shipbroker remarked to a recent conference panel session that for more shipowners to commit to LNG as fuel required much more support from the energy majors whose cargoes they might carry. In fact, Mr Christopher D. Chatterton, Chief Operating Officer of the Methanol Institute states that the majors have already come out in support of LNG as fuel.
As part of its efforts to become a global hub for low-carbon maritime technology, the UK government announced a further £1 million for technology and innovation projects through MarRI-UK, a consortium of leading maritime organisations.
The Global Industry Alliance (GIA) -a key IMO initiative supporting ship decarbonization- is set to be extended to 2023, in line with the timeframe of IMO’s Initial GHG Strategy. The extension follows two years of good progress by the initiative, whose 6th Task Force meeting took place in Gothenberg, Sweden, on 25 June.
In light of the World Environment Day, CMA CGM published its 2018 CSR Report, according to which the Group has achieved a 50% reduction in CO2 emissions per container transported per kilometer between 2005 and 2015. It has achieved a further 17% reduction between 2015 and 2018, in line with its 2025 objective of -30%.
ABS launched its ABS Low Carbon Shipping Outlook which defines ship technologies, operational efficiencies and alternative fuels and energy sources that are needed to achieve the 2030 and 2050 goals. To achieve cleaner and low carbon emissions, the shipping industry will need a better understanding of existing technologies and strategies while new technology, including fuels, will need to be developed.
The video, issued by ILO, attempts to explain how skills development measures are instrumental in reaping the benefits of potential job creation in new green economic activities and in addressing the social challenges in shifting to more sustainable models of energy generation, production and consumption across sectors.
