Following the container loss of the APL England on 24 May, Australian Maritime Safety Authority is responding to the incident by conducting an extensive drift modelling and investigating the matter at hand.

Following a fatality incident of a 48-year-old seafarer onboard a fishing trawler off the Sunshine Coast, AMSA is currently investigating the matter at hand by inspecting the vessel and conducting interviews with its crewmembers.

During the 2020 SAFETY4SEA Limassol Forum, Capt. Rohit Tandon, Head of Operations/ DPA/CSO, FML Ship Management Ltd Cyprus, focused on the behavioral safety as key component of an efficient safety culture. Even after best systems and procedures Incidents occur, Capt. Tandon noted, as unsafe behavior is an early warning system for accidents.

Sometimes a single large event causes a major issue onboard, and at other times it is the accumulation of smaller errors that creates a significant problem. One such accumulation of errors resulted in a large bunker spill and a multi-million dollar claim.

On April 15 2020, Fujitsu Limited verified that the results of a joint field trial with the Japan Coast Guard to predict vessel collisions with AI technology were successful. Specifically, the company's AI technology will be used to detect collision risks early and mitigate the danger of such accidents.
